Menopause 2.0 - Women of Wearables

Last week at the Menopause 2.0 Conference hosted by friends of NXGN at Women of Wearables, attendees also heard loud and clear what many have known but too few have addressed:

• 450+ million women worldwide experience peri- or menopausal symptoms.

• In the UK, that’s 13 million people—a third of all women.

• 90% of women say they were never educated about menopause.

• 1 in 3 are offered antidepressants instead of targeted support.

• And still, only 59% of UK medical schools include menopause in mandatory teaching.

It’s more than just a health issue—it’s a workforce issue, an education issue, and an investment opportunity. The Mayo Clinic estimates menopause costs $1.8B/year in lost productivity and $26.6B annually when medical costs are factored in (and this is just in the U.S. alone).

At the virtual conference, we saw signs of change. Panels like “Perimenopause in Focus: Facts, Feelings, and Future Steps” with experts from Oura, Flo Health, Proov, and Femmar shed light on the biological complexity of perimenopause and the critical importance of data, education, and compassionate care.

And in “Menopause: The Billion-Dollar Market Investors Can’t Ignore”, leaders from McKinsey Health, Alloy, Progyny, Nova Design, and SPARK Solutions reminded us that the fastest-growing healthtech market is still underserved (and ripe for innovation).
